Scientists implant a completely mechanical heart in a human for the first time magnetically levitated
The device is a “biventricular rotary blood pump” with a titanium structure and a single moving part. It uses a magnetic levitation rotor that pumps blood and replaces both ventricles of the heart.
This is the first time the device has been implanted in a human. The patient had end-stage heart failure.
The implant will help patients with heart failure wait for a donor organ transplant.
