Hailing to the Ancestors
In Rus' they believed that on this day the dead mourned their earthly life and wished to see their relatives. Therefore, it was customary to visit cemeteries – to lament at the graves and call out to parents. As a rule, this was done by elderly women and old women at dawn.
The mourners at the graveyard called on their dead parents: “Get up, wake up, look at your children, look at us, orphans, from your houses, and amuse us with a kind word!” It was believed that on this day the earth opens up and the souls of the deceased can fly into the light of day. Therefore, the dinner table was set as richly as possible, so that the ancestors were convinced that their children and grandchildren were living well.
Before every task on this day, the whole family prayed. However, the work was already treated with sacred awe. On this day, people remembered sayings about labor: “A slacker in arable land is like a drone in a hive”; “If you want bread with honey, grab a shovel”; “Lying on the beds means not eating bread.”
The day was also important for those involved in fishing: fishing on this day was considered a great sin. Perhaps this belief was due to the fact that around this time many river fish species spawn. By the way, the peasants also guessed from the young fish: if the fry disperse quickly, then they can sow earlier, but if they stay together for a long time, then it’s worth waiting.
