Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the law on the protection of the Russian language. Including, it provides for a ban on placing signs and inscriptions in foreign languages. The corresponding document appeared on the website of the publication of legal acts

Now information for consumers, which is not advertising and is placed on signs in the implementation of trade and service, should be presented in Russian. Translation is also allowed into foreign languages. However, in this case, the information must be translated into Russian, identical in content, placement, have the same colors, types and dimensions of the font. These provisions will not affect the branded names and trademarks. In addition, state languages ​​of the republics or other languages ​​of the peoples of Russia with translation into Russian can be used.

Also, changes will affect capital construction projects. Those names that the developer plans to use in advertising should be written on Cyrillic. The amendments will not affect those objects that were commissioned before the commission.

The department in the press service of the Department of the Media and Advertising of Moscow said that in the capital the previous signs in foreign languages ​​would not be changed.

“It is important for Moscow that new requirements are implemented without prejudice to navigation and urban environment. The law has no retroactive force, therefore, the already placed signs and inscriptions are not required to be changed, ”TASS said in the press service.

Changes will begin to operate on March 1, 2026.
