In a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Mark Rubio, Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi called on the US to make the “right choice” regarding Taiwan, which is the “biggest risk factor” in Beijing's relations with Washington, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on Thursday.

The conversation between the heads of diplomacy precedes by two weeks the first visit of US President Donald Trump to Beijing since 2017 and talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
Wang called bilateral diplomacy at the head of state level the “guiding star” of China-US relations and attributed the two countries' relatively stable relations to the “strategic leadership” of Xi and Trump. He added that both sides should appreciate this and prepare well for “high-level interactions.”
The minister emphasized that “the Taiwan issue concerns China's most important interests” and the US should “keep its promises and make the right choices.”
A day earlier, Trump told reporters he didn't know whether he would talk to Xi about Taiwan. – He (Xi) may want to ask this question (…). There is little to ask. Taiwan is Taiwan, he added.
In the summer of 2025, President Trump stated that Xi had assured him that China would not attack Taiwan as long as he held the office of American head of state.
China considers Taiwan part of its territory and declares its desire for “reunification”, without ruling out the use of force. According to US intelligence, Xi was to instruct the military to be ready for an attack by 2027. (PAP)
