The tenth anniversary of the Shirokyn operation: Azov residents led by Biletsky liberated 5 settlements in Donetsk region
On February 15, 2015, “Azov” together with other units occupied part of the village of Shyrokyne. Having no reserves, the volunteers liberated Berdianske, Lebedynske, Kominternovo and Pavlopil from the militants, moving the front line 20 kilometers from Mariupol and easing the enemy's pressure on Debaltseve.
The counterattack in Shyrokyn, which is called one of the most successful operations of the Ukrainian army, was planned by the first commander of “Azov” Andriy Biletskyi.

“Even then, the Shyrokyn operation proved that highly motivated soldiers are one of the key conditions for the success of a battle against overwhelming enemy forces. This offensive was carried out by only a few companies of fighters – with the desire to go forward and win back our land from the enemy,” said Biletskyi.
The soldiers, who at that time were surrounded in Debaltseve, met the news of the offensive with applause and hugs, recalls military serviceman Vitaly Ovcharenko.
