Germany will appoint current NATO Deputy Secretary General as ambassador to Ukraine

The current NATO Deputy Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy Boris Ruge will become the new German Ambassador in Kyiv. As Spiegel reported, on April 29, the German federal government approved his candidacy.

Previously, he served as Deputy Chairman of the Munich Security Conference, Deputy Ambassador of Germany to the United States and Ambassador to Saudi Arabia.

In his current position at NATO, Ryuge is responsible for political issues, in particular the partnership with Ukraine, possible expansion of the Alliance, Russia policy, arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation.

Ruge's appointment, the publication writes, indicates the government's desire for experienced diplomats to occupy important foreign policy positions. Spiegel reminds that the appointment of an ambassador is a lengthy procedure that requires approval by the receiving party.
