Statement from the Cancer Fighters Foundation
This is a moment that cannot be treated as an ordinary fundraising result. This is the huge trust that people have placed in this campaign, the Cancer Fighters Foundation, us and all the people involved in its implementation. That's why today we want to say clearly: this amount is not only a great opportunity for help, but also a huge responsibility.
We wholeheartedly thank everyone who contributed to this. We knew from the beginning that with such a scale it was not enough to say “thank you” and “we will help”. We have to show how we will help, who we will help. That is why we are already announcing that our action plan will be based on three foundations: urgent help for patients, systemic support for clinics and full transparency of spending funds.
Starting tomorrow [poniedziałku 27 kwietnia — red.] We are starting to analyze and close the most urgent collections for the Cancer Fighters Foundation. We are talking about people who need funds here and now for treatment, rehabilitation, medicines, transport to clinics, specialist consultations and everyday functioning during illness. We want the money from this campaign to actually start working where it is needed most as soon as possible.
The second important area will be support for people who, as a result of cancer, need prostheses, specialized equipment or solutions that allow them to return to as normal a life as possible. The disease very often does not end when treatment ends. For many people, its consequences last for years. That is why we want to help not only in the treatment process itself, but also in returning to fitness, independence and everyday life.
At the same time, we are conducting talks with clinics throughout Poland. We are already in contact with several centers and together we analyze what needs are most urgent and where our support can bring the greatest effect. This may mean purchasing equipment, equipping departments, improving treatment conditions, supporting specific medical programs or larger infrastructure projects.
The most important thing, however, is that all these activities will be conducted in a transparent and orderly manner. With such a scale of measures, transparency cannot be an add-on. It must be the basis of the entire process. Therefore, within a few days we will create a special website that will act as a public information center on the use of funds from this campaign.
This website will not be a regular summary page. It will be a place where we will show step by step what has been done, what funds were allocated for specific activities and what the effect of this assistance was. We want every donor, every person who shared the campaign, every person who was part of this movement, to be able to visit the website and see how their involvement translated into real actions.
We will publish specific cases of help there. If we close the fundraiser for a person under our care, we will describe who received the help, what amount was donated and for what purpose. If we buy equipment for the clinic, we will show which center it went to, why it was needed and how it will be used. If we support the family of a sick child, we will explain the scope of help and why it was necessary. If we get involved in a larger medical or infrastructure project, we will show its subsequent stages.
We want this website to function like a living report. Not a one-off document published after a few months, but a regularly updated place that shows the process. Because with such a large campaign, the most important thing is not only the final settlement. The most important thing is to constantly show how we make decisions and what effects they bring.
The second element will be a special council working for the foundation. Its task will be to support the process of making the most important decisions regarding the use of funds. It will consist of us, representatives of the foundation, people involved in this action and independent experts related to Polish oncology, children's treatment, rehabilitation, patient support and management of aid projects. Today, our invitation was accepted by Paweł Zawadzki – deputy director for development of the Lower Silesian Oncology Center and an outstanding pediatric oncologist from Cape of Hope – Professor Krzysztof Kałwak.
This is very important to us because we do not want decisions about the largest expenses to be made solely internally. With this scale of responsibility, we need consultations, expert knowledge and the broadest possible perspective. Each major purchase, each major project and each major system support will be preceded by a needs analysis, consultation with appropriate specialists and an assessment of the real impact.
The council is not intended to be an image-building element. It is intended to be a practical tool for responsible management of funds. Her role will be to evaluate priorities, support the foundation in selecting the most important projects, analyze the needs reported by clinics and ensure that aid goes where it can bring the greatest value.
This action opened up a completely new space of action. Thanks to this, we can help more widely than ever before. Not only to people who are already under the care of the Cancer Fighters Foundation, but also to other patients, families and facilities struggling with cancer. This offers enormous opportunities, but it also requires humility. Because every decision must be made keeping in mind that these are funds donated by people who trust us.
That's why we say clearly: we will help, but we will also show how we help. We will make decisions, but we will also explain why we made them. We will implement projects, but we will also inform about their effects.
This is our commitment to everyone who was and is part of this action.
The funds collected are intended to change people's real lives. They are intended to shorten the path to treatment, provide access to therapy, improve conditions in clinics, support families and help patients return to everyday life. And this is exactly what each subsequent step will be subordinated to.
Thank you for your trust. Now our task is to maintain them and show every day that this help goes where it should.
This is not the end. This is the beginning. We keep going.
