The District Prosecutor's Office in Dąbrowa Górnicza filed a complaint on Monday against the decision of the local court, which on Saturday decided that the suspect in the accident that killed MP Łukasz Litewka could be released from custody after paying a property bond.

Bartosz Kilian, spokesman for the District Prosecutor's Office in Sosnowiec, informed PAP about the complaint in the afternoon. In the opinion of the prosecutor's office, only absolute arrest of the suspect will allow the proceedings to be properly secured. The complaint will be examined by the District Court in Sosnowiec.
The District Court in Dąbrowa Górnicza decided on Saturday to arrest for three months a 57-year-old man suspected of causing the accident in which the MP died. The court stipulated that the man would be allowed to leave custody if he paid a bail bond of PLN 40,000 within 14 days. zloty. If the specified amount is paid, the pre-trial detention will be lifted and the man will be placed under police supervision and banned from leaving the country.
The tragic accident occurred on Thursday, April 23. According to the findings so far, a 57-year-old resident of Sosnowicz, driving a Mitsubishi Colt, drove into the opposite lane, where he collided with an MP riding a bicycle from the opposite direction. Łukasz Litewka died despite resuscitation. The driver of the Mitsubishi was detained. He was charged with causing a fatal traffic accident. This act is punishable by six months to eight years' imprisonment. According to the prosecutor's office, the man unintentionally violated road traffic rules and also unintentionally caused the deputy's death.
The suspect confessed to committing the crime he was accused of. He explained his behavior by loss of consciousness, momentary distraction or complete forgetfulness of the accident. Based on the collected materials, the prosecutor's office concluded that these statements “can only establish a defense line,” and some of the suspect's explanations “raise doubts.” The investigators justified the request to arrest the suspect, among others: threatening him with severe punishment and fear of fraud.
Łukasz Litewka was known for his charitable and social activities. His TeamLitewka foundation includes, among others: through social media, she publicized and supported the treatment of children and the rescue of animals, and responded to difficult situations in the local community, raising funds for rehabilitation equipment and helping accident victims. During the campaign before the 2023 parliamentary elections, Łukasz Litewka placed on election posters images of dogs from a local shelter waiting for adoption, with their names and telephone contact details. After the campaign, Litewka's banners were used as insulation material for shelter boxes.
The MP's funeral will take place next Wednesday in Sosnowiec. (PAP)
