Folk calendar
Martyn Lisogon
The future Saint Martin, who is honored on this day, lived in Constantinople and bore the title of Pope.
St. Martin was nicknamed the foxcatcher in Rus' because people believed that it was on his day that foxes leave old holes and dig new ones. It was believed that in the first days after relocation, foxes were blind and deaf, and they could be caught with bare hands.
The raven was also remembered on this day. They said that on Martyn (Martin) he bathes his children in puddles and sends them “to the department” – that is, to a special family life. The raven was called an ominous bird and was credited with magical powers. “A crow croaks in bad weather, and a raven croaks in bad weather,” the old men whispered. There were other signs, but all of them were unkind: if someone sings in the forest and sees a raven, he will run into a wolf; if a raven croaks at a church – to a dead man in the village, if a raven croaks at a hut – to a dead man in the yard.
In the southern regions, plowing and sowing of early crops began on Martin's Day. Therefore, special attention was paid to the weather. If the day was warm and bright, one could hope for a good harvest. It was customary for Martyn to work from dawn to dusk in order to prepare as large an area as possible for sowing.
