Behind the scenes of the “Cotroceni” negotiations. What Grindeanu told Nicușor Dan about CCR. No compromise is in sight

If it is true that electoral elections are held in poetry, and governance is done in prose, political crises are resolved in the dry language of mathematics. For now, according to eyewitness accounts at the closed-door consultations launched by Nicușor Dan, the calculations do not come out.
President Nicușor Dan concluded the discussions in Cotroceni by saying: “Calm and we will get through this”.
But the leaders of the coalition parties presented during the informal consultation, one after another, the same incongruous messages with a quick solution, according to information from political sources obtained by HotNews. PSD, PNL, USR and UDMR have been in the same positions since the beginning of the crisis.
There is a consensus of the former Coalition partners on one issue: they now claim that there will be no negotiations with the main opposition party, AUR, a party that protested through the voice of George Simion.
“De-escalation” for the sake of the way it sounds
Nicușor Dan discussed on Wednesday for almost 7 hours with representatives of the coalition parties.
The leaders from each delegation entered the Ambassadors' lounge at the Cotroceni Palace, presented the scenarios taken into account and explained that they were willing to “de-escalate”.
It's a term that sounds good to people, but it wasn't filled with anything concrete, political sources told HotNews.
Grindeanu told Nicușor Dan that he was thinking of reporting to the CCR
The social democrats, who were represented by Sorin Grindeanu, Claudiu Manda and Marian Neacșu, announced to the head of state that they will go ahead with the withdrawal of the ministers from the Government.
As a result, a few hours after they left Cotroceni, they confirmed the decision in a party leadership meeting. And on Thursday, after the Government meeting in which they will not participate, PSD ministers and secretaries of state will formally present their resignations around noon.
Moreover, according to some sources, the head of the PSD told the president that he is taking into account the referral to the Constitutional Court to ask for clarification on the effects of the withdrawal of the ministers from the Bolojan cabinet – is it considered that the Government has failed because the political composition is changing?
Filing a censure motion remains one of the options considered by the PSD, but only as a last resort.
At the same time, in the Opposition, AUR is preparing its own motion, which the most voted opposition party by Romanians intends to submit around May 13.
As an alternative, George Simion announced that he is willing to vote on any other motion that will be filed against the Bolojan Government.
Nicusor Dan intervenes only as a last resort
And Prime Minister Bolojan kept his rhetoric in the public space at the closed-door consultations, saying that he has no guarantee that by replacing him with another prime minister, the problems will be solved.
“Let's assume that a prime minister comes who has a very important determination, who does things the way they should going forward. The question is: how long will it take until the PSD does again what it is doing in these months and generates a crisis”, said Bolojan in an interview on B1 on Sunday evening.
Dominic Fritz declared after the almost two hours of talks with the president that the version of the technocrat prime minister was not put on the table.
But the representatives of the National Minorities group talked about another prime minister, an independent one.
According to HotNews information, the president is considering to intervene and propose the PSD, PNL, UDMR and USR leaders a prime minister's name only if all other avenues are exhausted – if the parties fail to reach a consensus or if a new majority cannot be found, for example.
“We do not accept collaboration with AUR”
The leaders of the UDMR and the National Minorities explicitly conveyed on Wednesday that they are totally against a minority Government supported in Parliament by AUR.
Asked by reporters about a collaboration with AUR lawmakers, Fritz said the USR is open to discussions, but rules out “a formal negotiation” with the George Simion-led group. The PSD also denied it, as did the PNL.
However, if a vote is reached in the Parliament, whether it is a vote of approval of the new majority or a motion of censure, PNL, USR, UDMR and the National Minorities still need 52 votes.
This is because together the senators and deputies of the 4 formations have only 181, and to pass the majority test, at least 233 votes are needed. These can come from AUR or from parliamentarians of POT, SOS Romania, PACE.
