Folk calendar

Rodion Icebreaker

On this day, the Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Herodion, the apostle of seventy.

Among the people, Saint Rodion (Herodion) was known as the Icebreaker, because at this time the ice was actively breaking and melting. They watched him and made certain predictions for the future. For example, it was believed that if the ice on the river becomes piles, then there will be piles of bread.

They also said that on this day the sun meets the month. In the fall, at the first frost, the two luminaries disperse in different directions: one to the east, the other to the west, and are not seen again until spring. When the day, the sun and the month meet on Rodionov, they tell each other news, and sometimes they quarrel. If the meeting turns out to be “good”, that is, with a clear sun and a bright day, then the summer will be good. A “thin” meeting, which is accompanied by fog and cloudy skies, portends a bad summer.

On this day plowing could begin. So they said: “Rodion brought water, put a plow to plow the oats.” This work was not easy, but it had to be done carefully, without being lazy. The peasants knew: “There are flaws in the arable land – there are holes in the pocket”; “Plow deeper – chew more bread”; “If you don’t work, you won’t get enough bread”; “Plowing and harrowing – don’t talk for an hour”; “Even though you trample the dirt, you can fight the oats.”

By the way, there were different signs regarding when to sow oats. It was believed that sowing should begin when the frog screams, or when the moles begin to emerge from their holes, or when the leaves bloom on the birch and oak trees. The sowing of oats continued until the apple and pear trees bloomed.
