In exchange for restoring supplies via the “Przyjaźń” pipeline, the politician declares an end to the many months of impasse in relations with the European Union and the unblocking of billions of dollars in aid for Ukraine.

Hungary's energy situation has become the central point of Peter Magyar's post-election agenda. During Monday's press conference, the politician made a direct comment an appeal to President Volodymyr Zelensky, demanding an efficient response to the crisis related to the damaged transmission infrastructure.

Magyar emphasized that the Hungarian side hopes to keep its previous declarations regarding the technical condition of the bus. — If on the Ukrainian side the Druzhba pipeline is ready to transport oil, then they should kindly reopen it as promised – declared the winner of the election. He also added that the responsibility lies not only with Kiev: — We also expect that Russia will start supplying oil (to the pipeline) in accordance with the agreements.
The transit of raw material to Hungary and Slovakia was interrupted at the end of January after a Russian attack that damaged the installation. Although Kiev declared its willingness to repair it, Budapest repeatedly accused its neighbor of deliberately delaying the works for political reasons.

However, President Zelensky recently announced that the transmission should start by the end of April, using EU financial support.
EU billions at stake
The most important declaration of Magyar is the proposal of a “new opening” in relations with Ukraine and Brussels. He announced that, as the new prime minister, he would withdraw the veto imposed by Viktor Orbán on the gigantic EU loan for Kiev in the amount of EUR 90 billion. There is one condition: the oil must flow. Such a move would mean a fundamental change in Hungarian foreign policy, which has so far been based on blocking initiatives supporting Ukraine.
At the same time, the European Commission is exercising restraint. EC spokesman Olof Gill refused to answer the question whether Brussels would finance the repair of the pipeline. – We will not provide information at this stage – he stated briefly, only ensuring constant contact with all parties to the dispute.
