VIDEO Police officers accused of running away when the armed attack took place in Kiev / A police chief announced his resignation

The Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs announced on Sunday that two police officers had been suspended after a video circulated on social media showing them fleeing the area of the armed attack in Kiev, in which six people were killed, according to AFP. In addition, a police chief announced his resignation, The Kyiv Independent also notes.

Yevhen Zhukov, the head of Ukraine's patrol police, has resigned amid controversy over how police responded to Saturday's gun attack in Kiev.

On Saturday, a man opened fire on people in the Holosiivskyi district of the Ukrainian capital. The attack resulted in the death of six people, and the attacker, a person born in Moscow, was in turn killed by special forces.

“I have decided to submit a report of dismissal from the position I hold,” Zhukov said, saying his gesture was a “correct” one.

Images circulated on social media in which two police officers, dressed in uniform and wearing yellow vests, are seen with a seated person, then run away when gunshots are heard. The video was also shared by The Kyiv Independent publication.

“Shameful and undignified behavior. It's a shame for the whole system. They were suspended and an investigation is underway,” Ukrainian Interior Minister Igor Klymenko said on Telegram.

Klymenko urged the public not to “generalize” based on the “actions of two employees.”

The authorities have not yet determined exactly the motives of the attacker, but the investigators of the secret service framed the case as a “terrorist act”, according to EFE, quoted by Agerpres.

The minister said the attacker's mental state “was clearly unstable”.

“It must be examined how he obtained the necessary medical certificates to extend his gun permit,” added Igor Klymenko.

He promised that there would be thorough checks on gun owners, given that Saturday's attack was carried out with a legally registered weapon.
