Peter Magyar's majority in the Hungarian Parliament increases. “An unprecedented mandate”

Peter Magyar's Tisza, the party that won Hungary's parliamentary election, will have a majority of 141 of the total 199 seats in the Budapest legislature, according to results after processing mail-in votes, those from foreign missions and later centralized votes, the electoral office announced on Saturday, according to Reuters.

The preliminary projection had put the number of future Tisza MPs at 138, a level sufficient anyway for a two-thirds constitutional majority for the party led by Peter Magyar. The final count took the tally to 141.

“An unprecedented majority, an unprecedented mandate and, at the same time, responsibility,” Magyar said on Saturday, commenting on the final result in a Facebook post.

Peter Magyar's party won a landslide victory in last Sunday's election, ending the 16 years in power of incumbent Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his Fidesz party.

Another aspect that highlights the extent of the defeat suffered by Viktor Orban is the result from the single-member constituencies. Fidesz had won 87 out of a total of 106 in 2022, and has now won just 10.

Who is Peter Magyar, the winner of the Hungarian elections

Peter Magyar, the prime minister-elect, was part of Fidesz, but later turned against Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

The 45-year-old Hungarian comes from a wealthy conservative family in Budapest. His relatives include prominent lawyers and judges, as well as former president Ferenc Mádl, who led the country during Orbán's first term as prime minister.

His wife, Judit Varga, was justice minister in Viktor Orban's government, and in 2023 she stepped down to lead the Fidesz campaign for the European Parliament elections. Her political career ended abruptly a year later when Orban forced her to take the blame for covering up a child sex abuse scandal.
