Folk calendar
Evtikhiy Tikhiy and Erema Proletny
This day was named in honor of two saints – Archbishop Eutyches of Constantinople, who lived in the 6th century, and the martyr Jeremiah, who died for the faith in the 3rd century.
In Rus', according to the day of Eutychius and Erema (Jeremiah), the grain harvest was judged. To do this, they watched the weather; a good omen was the lack of wind. They said: “If Eutychius is quiet, it means a harvest of early grain, and when Erema is hit by the wind, he will knock off the ear”; “Erema Proletny is furious and threatens with the wind – it’s not good to sow spring crops, you won’t be able to collect the seeds.”
Apple trees usually bloom on Eutychium. In Russian folklore, they have always been a symbol of girlish beauty and innocence, which is why in wedding songs the bride is often compared to a tree in bloom. On this day, it was necessary to respect the apple tree – to bow to it, support the branches so that they could withstand the future harvest, paint the trunk to protect it from harmful insects. It was not a sin to eat pickled apples – if, of course, they survived until spring.
