Siberian scientists will create radiation protection for astronauts on the ISS

April 16 13:00

Scientists from Siberia will develop special fabrics for spacesuits and protective tiles for habitable compartments of spacecraft. As RIA Tomsk writes, the materials should protect astronauts on the ISS from exposure to high-energy ions.

We are talking about one of the most poorly studied types of cosmic radiation. It freely overcomes the Earth's magnetic field and reaches orbit, posing a real danger to the crew.

As the head of the laboratory of radiation and space materials science, Mikhail Mikhailov, explained, due to the low flows, these ions have almost no effect on the wear of the materials of the spacecraft themselves. But thanks to their high energy, they penetrate inside the ISS and affect astronauts and biological objects. This is why radiation protective coatings are needed.

The project is being carried out by specialists from the Tomsk University of Control Systems and Radioelectronics together with colleagues from the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. They signed the corresponding memorandum in March 2026.

Already this year, scientists plan to begin solving the problem. They will study existing and new protection methods and select the most resistant materials.
