Hungary is withdrawing troops that Orban deployed to defend against the “Ukrainian threat”

On February 25, after the cessation of Russian oil supplies through the Druzhba oil pipeline and against the backdrop of the election campaign, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Ukraine could allegedly attack other Hungarian energy systems.

Then Orban convened a meeting of the defense council and it was decided to strengthen the protection of critical infrastructure. In particular, they planned to station the military near energy facilities and attract additional funds to prevent possible attacks.

Just two days after the defeat of Orban’s Fidesz party in the elections, the Hungarian defense forces announced the completion of tasks for the protection and protection of energy infrastructure in certain regions, the media writes.

The armed forces noted that from April 15, 2026, they began to “rationalize” the number of military personnel, as well as the gradual withdrawal of units from some locations where the need for military support has disappeared.

At the same time, the Hungarian publication notes that, according to the Hungarian General Staff, the decision to reduce the military presence is due to the fact that critical infrastructure operators have reviewed their own security systems and strengthened security using their own resources.

444.hu also reports that about 600 military personnel were previously involved in this program.
