USR demands the sanctioning of deputy Dan Tanasă for the scandal made in the plenary session last week: “These statements go beyond the limits of a political criticism”

The Save Romania Union (USR) submitted, on Wednesday, a referral to the Permanent Bureau of the Chamber of Deputies, requesting the sanctioning of AUR deputy Dan Tanasă for “defamatory statements” made in the plenary session of April 8, 2026.

According to the document, which was later sent to the Legal Commission, the AUR parliamentarian would have made an “obviously insulting and derogatory” speech to some fellow deputies. In his intervention, Dan Tanasă used offensive expressions and comparisons considered degrading, exceeding the limits of a political criticism or a procedural dispute.

USR representatives claim that the language used “affects the dignity of the persons concerned and creates a hostile and humiliating climate”, emphasizing that the debates in the Chamber of Deputies' plenary session should be focused on legislative initiatives and the protection of citizens' rights, not on personal attacks.

“Mr. Dan Tanasă, AUR deputy, made a series of statements of an obviously insulting and derogatory nature towards some deputies:

'Let's not look into the mouth of a former reality show star and let's not look into the mouth of a gentleman about whom all the press wrote that he is a liar and that he would have finished a college that, in fact, he never finished. (…) You, who applaud with bananas in hand the closing of some televisions and some radios? Who are you applauding with bananas in your mouth and with bananas in your hand, applauding your fist in the mouth of the Opposition, are you talking about freedom of expression? You can't, every decent person's stomach turns upside down, every common sense person's stomach turns upside down, when they hear those from USR talking about freedom of conscience, freedom of thought, freedom of expression. For USR, I repeat, there is still a broad theme in Romanian society we haven't decided whether USR is a venereal disease or a mental illness. This is the substance debate'.

Through their content, these statements go beyond the limits of a political criticism or a procedural dispute and are registered in an offensive and degrading discursive register, which affects the dignity of the persons concerned and creates a hostile and humiliating climate”. it is stated in the document submitted to the Permanent Bureau and sent to the Legal Committee of the Chamber of Deputies.

The signatories of the notification also show that the statements were not related to the subject of the parliamentary debate and turned the intervention into an offensive speech, including through references considered offensive to some patients suffering from certain ailments. In their opinion, the language used is incompatible with the rules of parliamentary conduct and affected the smooth running of the meeting.

USR considers that the intervention of the AUR deputy violated the rules of discipline, courtesy and respect within the Chamber of Deputies and requests the application of the sanctions provided for in the regulation.
