Trump, surprising reaction after Péter Magyar's victory in Hungary: “I think he will do a good job”

US President Donald Trump said he was not worried about Viktor Orbán's defeat in Hungary's election and had words of appreciation for newly appointed Prime Minister Péter Magyar.

In a discussion with reporters, Trump stated that he considers Magyar “a good man” and that he trusts that this “vto do a good job” at the head of the Budapest government.
“I think the new man will do a good job. He's a good mansaid Donald Trump.
The US president added that he did not know if his direct involvement in the Hungarian election campaign would have changed the outcome, noting that he was not very involved in this election.
“He was way behind. I didn't get too involved in it. Viktor is a good man though,” the White House leader also declared.
Trump also pointed out that the new leader in Budapest hails from Orbán's former party and shares some positions, particularly on immigration policy, suggesting a partial continuity of vision between the two.
Hungary is going through a major political change, after 16 years of Orbán rule.
Péter Magyar won the parliamentary elections with a strong mandate of reform and rapprochement with the European Union.
In an interview, Trump described Viktor Orbán as “a friend” and “a good man,” praising his immigration policies.
“Viktor Orban was a friend of mine. It wasn't my choice, but he was my friend, a good man. He did a good job on immigration. He didn't let people come in and destroy his country like Italy did“said Trump, in the over six-minute interview given to Corriere della Sera.
In the first US reaction after Hungary's election, Vice President JD Vance said he was saddened by the result, but assured that Washington would work with the new government in Budapest.
“It saddens me that he lost, but I am sure that we will collaborate very well with the future Hungarian Prime Ministerr,” Vance said on Fox News.
