A doctor from the Krasnoyarsk Regional Hospital, Sofia Kaunietis, traveled to Uzbekistan as part of the charitable mission of the “Giving a Smile” foundation. A year ago, Khasan Baiev worked in a regional hospital. Together with local surgeons, he operated on 50 children with congenital facial pathologies – the so-called “cleft lip” and “cleft palate”. After the operation, it was Sofia Kaunietis who treated the patients and removed the stitches. The result impressed even the Moscow guest – not a single complication.

Baiev appreciated the professionalism of the Krasnoyarsk doctor and called her to his team. The trip to the city of Nukus in the Republic of Karakalpakstan as part of Uzbekistan lasted from April 3 to April 13. Over ten days, local doctors, together with invited specialists, examined 300 children and operated on 80 of them.

Sofia Kaunietis has already returned home. The regional hospital proudly notes that their doctor is in demand far beyond her native land, and the mission in Uzbekistan has become a new serious experience for her.

Let us add that Khasan Baiev is a world-famous maxillofacial surgeon, philanthropist, professional sambo wrestler, judoka and wrestler. He graduated from the Krasnoyarsk Medical Institute, first worked in his native Chechnya, then, after the war, he left for the USA, continuing to help children in Russia and other countries.

After 15 years, Khasan Baiev returned to Chechnya. Now he is one of Russia's leading specialists in the field of plastic surgery and is widely involved in charity work. His charitable foundation “Giving a Smile” has been holding campaigns for free treatment of children with facial pathologies since 2007.
