Jaqueline Cristian (27 years old, 33rd place WTA) won dramatically, 2-6, 7-6 (6), 7-5, in two hours and 47 minutes, in front of Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah (France, 20 years old, 135th place in the world), advancing to the 2nd round of the WTA 250 tournament in Rouen. She saved 4 match points against the player who beat her last year here in the second round.

For the second year in a row, Romania's second racket, Jaqueline Cristian, faced off in the WTA 250 tournament in Rouen with Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonahthis time from round 1.

The 20-year-old Frenchwoman, ranked 135th in the world, came to this duel with a terrible record: no match won in 2026 from as many played. Starting with the WTA 250 qualifiers in Hobart, going through the Transylvania Open and WTA 125 events, Rakotomanga did not find victory.

Arriving in Rouen, however, her tennis flourished from the very first game she played. In 2025, when she was ranked 291st in the WTA, she prevailed against Jaqueline in this tournament in the 2nd round with an emphatic 6-2, 6-3. It seemed hard to believe, however, that history could repeat itself in an eerily similar scenario.

And yet, it was, at least in the first set. An act that progressed in balance until 2-2, where the stretched thread broke. A break to zero by the French immediately put her in an advantageous position after Sarah, as she prefers to be called, played very well. She had a more solid evolution at work than the Romanian and managed to win many points thanks to the short skilful – especially when Jaq stays more behind the back line of the field.

58.8%was the first serve success rate for Jaqueline Cristian in set 1, compared to 80% of her opponent

Unsatisfied with her game, preoccupied, the “tricolor” once again surrendered her serve after a mammoth game, after she had saved a break chance of her opponent. Rakotomanga then closed with a safe range, 6-2. Same as in 2025.

Second set, different scenario and drama until the end

The first games of the second set were also in balance, with Cristian safe on serve until 2-2. A short circuit there, a few points conceded quickly, almost dizzyingly, and the break rounded for the Frenchwoman, 3-2.

The Romanian started the chase, she had her first break points of the match at 4-3 – but without success. Vibrating with confidence after emerging from the tricky situation, Rakotomanga braved the next return game, earning his first chance of the match with a superb down-the-line execution.

However, Jaqueline is no stranger to such borderline situations. He saved, then once again and once again, living dangerously on the Rouen slag, but emerging safely from a hellish range: 4-5.

And what immediately followed! Serving for the match, the French seriously faltered, eventually succumbing to the pressure, while Cristian responded firmly, with focus and precision. With 3 match points saved in the account earlier, a large portion of oxygen also came: break and 5-5. Some parties, however, do not follow the predictable scenarios. Emotions alternated between the two, the rockets quivered, then found their safety. So only a tie-break could follow.

One full of twists and turns, excellent shots and painful hesitations. But Jaqueline, with her fourth match point saved, finished heroically with a superb long forehand line, an act of fighting power pushed to the sky. 8-6 in the tie-break. This was the coincidence with last year's match, the battle was open until the last ball.

Jaqueline Cristian, what a victory! Exceptional comeback from 0-4

The decisive set once again brought Cristian into a difficult situation: she lost the first four games, in front of the eyes of the French public who perhaps anticipated the success of her compatriot. 0-4, what do you do at this stage of the match? You react, you fight, you fight, including with your own mixed, oscillating experiences. Something has not changed at any moment: the desire to conquer.

And Jaqueline Cristian broke through, the hardest way. From 0-4recovered the distance, ball by ball, shout by shout, and prevailed with 7-5, after 2 hours and 47 minutes! A victory to remember for a long time to come.

I just gave it my all, stepped up and I truly believe that my mental attitude today was the key to success – Jaqueline Cristian

For Jaqueline, the tournament in Rouen brought an important performance in 2023, when the Romanian advanced to the semifinals, being stopped by the Swiss Viktorija Golubic. He had also played the year before, losing in the inaugural round, and in 2025 he stopped in the second round.
