Doctors in Yakutia revived a man who fell asleep in the cold and died

April 14 16:30

In Mirny, doctors saved a man who fell asleep on the street in 20-degree frost and stopped showing signs of life. His heart did not beat for five hours, his blood pressure was not determined, but doctors managed to bring the patient back, says KP – Yakutia.

At the end of March, a man was returning home after a feast, sat down on a bench and froze. Passers-by did not notice him immediately. The ambulance that arrived recorded clinical death – the cardiogram showed a straight line.

The paramedic contacted the anesthesiologist-resuscitator of the Mirny Central District Hospital, Dmitry Bosikov. The doctor previously introduced a technique for “defrosting” patients with hypothermia. He ordered the man to be taken to the emergency room.

The first thing the doctors needed to do was slowly warm up the body. Raising the temperature too quickly would destroy small blood vessels and lead to a heart attack, brain swelling or kidney failure. In four hours the temperature was raised from 24 to 34 degrees.

When the thermometer reached 34 degrees, extended cardiopulmonary resuscitation began: chest compressions, artificial ventilation and stimulant drugs. After 25 minutes, ventricular fibrillation appeared on the monitor. After the shock, the heart started working.

The man spent 5 hours and 34 minutes in a state of clinical death. After the heart started, he was put into an artificial coma. A day later he came to his senses. There were no complications. After five days of observation, the patient was discharged.
