Corruption and abuse of influence. Charges against the wife of the Prime Minister of Spain

Juan Carlos Peinado accused the prime minister's wife, Fr four felonies — economic corruption, embezzlement, misappropriation of property and abuse of influence by taking advantage of her position at the Complutense University of Madrid. Simultaneously discontinued the proceedings regarding the alleged practice of the profession without qualifications, explaining the lack of solid evidence.

The court also filed a motion to indict Cristina Alvarez, a former adviser in the prime minister's office, and entrepreneur Juan Carlos Barrabes. The prosecutor's office accused them of abuse of influence and corruption.

Two years of investigation

In this way, the judge ended the preparatory proceedings that had lasted almost two years. He appointed the parties five days to submit applications related to starting the process.

The circumstances surrounding the announcement of the charges sparked political controversy. When the judge announced the indictment, Sanchez and his wife were in Beijing – reports the Europa Press agency, citing government sources.

The prime minister's circle criticized the fact that the judge announced the decision at that time. “This is not a coincidence,” said the cited sources, emphasizing that Peinado usually announces his decisions when the prime minister is abroad.

Sanchez he repeatedly assured his wife's innocence, expressing the belief that in time justice will be served.

A series of scandals surrounding Sanchez

This is not the only accusation of corruption among the head of government's associates. At the beginning of April, the court started the case regarding the Koldo scandal — the most famous corruption scandal in Spain in recent years, in which former close associates of Sanchez are involved.

At the end of May, the trial will begin in the Badajoz court in Extremadura trial for corruption and abuse of influence against the prime minister's brother David Sanchez.
