If the wound is shallow, you should not stop the bleeding right away. The blood itself washes bacteria out of the wound. The bite site should be washed for at least five to ten minutes under running water and laundry soap, then treated with chlorhexidine or miramistin and applied a sterile bandage. After this, you should consult a doctor as soon as possible.
If there is severe bleeding, you need to act differently. A tight pressure bandage should be applied. If blood spurts out (this is a sign of arterial bleeding), a tourniquet is applied above the wound and the time it is applied is recorded. Then you need to urgently call an ambulance.
At the hospital, the doctor will perform surgical treatment, check the integrity of the tendons and nerves, and prescribe antibiotics. In addition, the victim will be given a course of rabies vaccine, usually six injections. If necessary, the tetanus vaccination will be updated.
