According to the organizers, more than 100 thousand people took part in the rally.
At first, the event on Heroes Square was positioned as a large musical concert, in which more than 50 groups and performers performed one song. However, over time it acquired a political character and turned into a protest against the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
Participants chanted anti-government slogans, in particular, Ruszkik haza! (“Russians, go home!”), which is a reference to the anti-Soviet uprising of 1956 and is today used as a symbol of protest against the rapprochement of Budapest with Moscow.
Organizers of the Civic Resistance Movement said the concert was intended to mobilize voters and demonstrate public dissatisfaction with the current government.
The event took place against the background of the strengthening of the positions of the opposition party Tisza and its leader Peter Madyar, who, according to polls, have significant support among young people.
Elections in Hungary will take place this Sunday, April 12.
