US Fed and Treasury Chief Urgently Summon Big Bank Chiefs After Anthropic Reveals What Mythos Can Do

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell held an emergency meeting with bank chief executives this week to warn them about the cyber risks posed by Anthropic's latest artificial intelligence (AI) model, two sources familiar with the situation told Reuters.

Anthropic released the powerful Mythos model earlier this week, but has not made it widely available, citing concerns that it could expose previously unknown cybersecurity vulnerabilities.

Mythos can hack any system or browser

The company said the model is capable of identifying and exploiting vulnerabilities in “all major operating systems and all major web browsers.”

Last week, Anthropic said it was in ongoing discussions with US government officials about the model's “offensive and defensive cyber capabilities.”

A third source close to the matter confirmed Anthropic's moves, saying the company proactively briefed senior US government officials and key industry stakeholders about Mythos' capabilities ahead of its launch.

The meeting hosted by the Treasury on Tuesday in Washington was aimed at ensuring that banks are aware of the risks posed by Mythos and similar models and are taking steps to defend their systems, one of the sources said.

Which bank heads were at the meeting

The invitations were sent as most of the chief executives of the biggest US banks were already in Washington to attend other meetings, one of the sources said.

Access to Mythos will be limited to about 40 technology companies, including Microsoft and Google, Anthropic reported.

Bloomberg News, which first reported on the matter on Thursday, reported that the chief executives of Citigroup, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Goldman Sachs were in attendance. JPMorgan Chief Executive Jamie Dimon was unable to attend, one of the sources told Reuters.
