KrasRZD organized 2 artificial avalanches in the Kuznetsk Alatau mountains

10 April 14:23

On the most avalanche-prone section of the Krasnoyarsk Mainline – the Luzhba – Charysh section, located on the border of Khakassia and the Kemerovo region, to ensure the safety of train traffic, railway workers carried out 2 forced descents of snow masses.

The work was carried out on a small section of the railway track in the Kuznetsk Alatau mountains, where the road is sandwiched between rock masses and the Tom River.

As noted by specialists of the KrasRussian Railway infrastructure complex, the maximum thickness of snow cover recorded on the slopes adjacent to the Luzhba – Charysh section exceeded 3.5 m – a record for the last ten years.

Against the backdrop of spring warming, the snow became wet, began to melt and gained a critical mass. In this regard, trains on the stretch were allowed to pass only along one track, protected by a special avalanche gallery.

The Krasnoyarsk Railway decided to organize preventive explosions at the tops of 8 dens in order to prevent the spontaneous descent of snow masses onto the second track, stretched along the Tom River.

In total, about 580 kg of explosives were placed in the places where they were torn off. As a result of artificial descents, about 24 thousand cubic meters came down from the slopes. m of snow. All snow masses fell into safe hollows and special catching trenches.

The work was carried out during technological “windows”, when there is no train traffic.

Now the threat of a spontaneous avalanche on the Luzhba – Charysh section has been eliminated, trains are being processed on both tracks.

Let us note that on the mountain route of the Krasnaya Railway from Biskamzhi to Mezhdurechensk, connecting Khakassia and the Kemerovo region, there are 18 avalanche-prone areas. Krasnoyarsk railway workers are monitoring the condition of snow masses on the slopes. The enhanced control regime will remain in effect until the end of April.
