Iraq is facing a major energy crisis after the entire national power grid went down completely on Wednesday, March 4, leaving the country in darkness. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Electric Energy in Baghdad, which confirmed that the blackout affects all Iraqi provinces.
“The power grid has completely stopped in all Iraqi provinces,” sent the institution, according to the official news agency INA, quoted by lbcgroup.tv.
The authorities stated that the reasons that led to the collapse of the system are under investigation, without providing, for now, additional details regarding a possible technical cause or a security incident.
The blackout comes in a tense regional context, where the critical infrastructure of Middle Eastern states has become vulnerable amid conflict and instability.
A total blackout affects not only households, but also hospitals, public institutions, communication networks and industrial facilities, putting additional pressure on the authorities.
In parallel with the blackout announcement, the United States Embassy in Baghdad issued an alert to American citizens in Iraqi territory. American diplomats recommend them to leave the country “as soon as possible, under safe conditions.”
At the same time, US officials are asking citizens to stay in shelters until conditions “are safe to leave”, thus signaling concerns about security on the ground.
For now, Iraqi authorities have not specified a timeline for resuming electricity supply nationwide, and the extent and duration of the crisis remain uncertain.
