VIDEO President Nicușor Dan's praise for prosecutor Cristina Chiriac, accused of keeping evidence in the drawer in the case of the former bishop of Huși. “There were no assaults and there were no minors”

On Wednesday, Nicușor Dan rejected the accusations brought against the prosecutor Cristina Chiriac, whom he appointed as the general prosecutor of Romania, praising her for her work in DNA Iași. The president defended prosecutor Chiriac in the case of the former bishop of Huși, stating that she did not hide evidence and that she sent them to court when she orchestrated the blackmail case in which the former bishop was a victim in 2017.

  • In 2017, Cristina Chiriac limited herself to investigating only the crime of blackmail claimed by the bishop of Huși at the time, Cornel Onilă. The recordings obtained during the searches depicted Onilă having sexual relations with young people.
  • Prosecutor Chiriac sent to court only the evidence that supported the crime of blackmail, with which the file was sent to the competent prosecutor's office – the Iași Court of Appeal, to investigate the content of the records.
  • The investigation was reopened in 2019 at the Prosecutor's Office of the Iași Court of Appeal after the revelations of the “Let there be light” journalists. The former bishop of Husi was definitively sentenced to 8 years in prison in 2025 for sexual abuse, the victims being his former students.

“I was very surprised when I saw the attacks on Mrs. Chiriac”

“I was very happy that Mrs. Chiriac from DNA Iași is running”, said the president Nicușor Dan in the press conference in which he announced the appointment of the chief prosecutors at the big prosecutor's offices.

Among the seven prosecutors appointed to head the General Prosecutor's Office, DNA and DIICOT, President Nicușor Dan gave the most appreciation to prosecutor Cristina Chiriac, whom he appointed to the position of Prosecutor General of Romania.

Harshly criticized by the CSM, which gave her a negative opinion, Cristina Chiriac was praised by Nicușor Dan, who claimed that she was defending her for all the accusations.

The president stated that following informal discussions with prosecutors, he found out that DNA Iași was considered the best structure in the country.

“I was very surprised when I saw the attacks on Ms. Chiriac. Let me tell you what she did with a team of 8-9 people in Iași (no – complete scheme of prosecutors, editor's note). We have sent to court the president of the CJ Iași, the mayor of Iași and the president of the CJ Vaslui. I don't see anywhere else in Romania where this is happening”, said Nicușor Dan.

The president denied that DNA Iași had the worst results in the country, as it appears from the last balance sheet published by DNA itself.

According to official data, in 2025, the Iași territorial structure of DNA had 289 cases to resolve, of which 102 were resolved. Out of the total number of cases resolved by the DNA prosecutors in Iași, 3 cases were completed with referrals to court by indictment, and 8 with plea agreements. All other cases were settled with dismissals, disclaimers of jurisdiction and rejoinders.

Nicușor Dan accused those who criticize the performance of Cristina Chiriac of “manipulation” and “bad faith”.

“It is said that the Iași DNA section had a disastrous activity, that it only had three indictments. Anyone who knows what is happening in the prosecutor's offices, they do not only look at the indictments, but also at the plea agreements because the Criminal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure made the activity difficult. The heads of the prosecutor's offices or departments realized that it is much more effective to focus on the admission of guilt,” he also said the president.

Nicușor Dan also wanted to clarify the story of the million euros from Cristina Chiriac's wealth declaration: “She doesn't have 1 million, but 10 thousand euros.” In the wealth declaration published in 2024, the prosecutor mentioned the amount of one million euros in the accounts. The mention appears next. Cristina Chiriac said, at the CSM interview, that it was a “material error”.

“He didn't hide evidence”

President Dan also referred to the file of the former bishop of the Husi Corneliu Onilă, orchestrated by Cristina Chiriac.

“I read that he hid evidence in the Husi case. He didn't hide them, but sent them to the judge. And he didn't send them to the prosecutor's office because there were no assaults and they weren't minors,” the president pointed out.

The criminal trial concluded in 2025 definitively established that the recordings, including those viewed by prosecutor Cristina Chiriac, were sexual assaults, rapes. The victims were not minors. They were former students of Cornel Onilă, bishop at the time and professor at the Theological Seminary in Huși,

In 2017, Cristina Chiriac orchestrated the blackmail case in which Cornel Onilă was the victim. Following the raids, several records were seized from the priests who were blackmailing the bishop. They caught Onilă while he was having sexual relations with young people. The investigation, coordinated by the prosecutor Chiriac, was limited only to the crime of blackmail.

The recordings depicting the bishop having sexual relations with young people were not sent to the competent prosecutor's office for verification. The DNA does not have the competence to investigate sexual crimes.

The investigation into the sexual abuse of the former bishop was reopened two long years later, after the journalists from Să fie lăgăra wrote that the prosecutor Chiriac kept the evidence in the drawer and did not sever the file.

It was only in 2019 that the records were sent to the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Iași Court of Appeal, which had jurisdiction to investigate sexual crimes.

Cornel Onilă was definitively sentenced in 2025 to 8 years in prison. He admitted to having sex with the former students, but claimed the sex acts were consensual.

Who is the prosecutor Cristina Chiriac

Cristina Chiriac leads DNA Iași from 2022. She advanced quickly, in 2015, to DIICOT and then to DNA, after five years of activity at the prosecutor's offices attached to the courts of Bârlad and Vaslui.

Cristina Chiriac was appointed prosecutor by President Traian Băsescu in 2012, starting at the Prosecutor's Office next to Bârlad Court. After three years of activity at the local prosecutor's offices in Bârlad and Vaslui, in 2015, she jumped directly to DIICOT, the territorial structure in Vaslui.

In the professional hierarchy, the next prosecutor's office in rank is the one next to the Court. Cristina Chiriac has never worked at a prosecutor's office next to the court.

After arriving at DIICOT, in the same year 2015, Cristina Chiriac was delegated to DNA, the Iasi territorial service.
