Folk calendar
Gabriel Blagovest
Archangel Gabriel is one of the angels revered not only in Christianity, but also in Judaism and Islam. His name literally means “The Most High is my strength.” Gabriel's nickname is Blagovest, or Blagovestnik.
Despite Gabriel’s good name, in the southern regions of Russia, especially in Little Russia, there was a belief that everything born on this day would turn out awkward. There was a saying about this: “What is born on Gabriel is ugly and ugly.”
Also on this day, women finish the last yarn. After Gabriel it was impossible to spin – it wouldn’t do any good anyway. The reason for this superstition is obviously that in the spring women have a lot of urgent matters to do in the field and in the garden, and there is no point in wasting time on housework. It’s not for nothing that they say: “In spring, the day is long, but the thread is short.” This means that the spinner simply will not have time to spin it before the harvest begins.
The peasants observed: if the bird cherry tree turned green by Gabriel, it was time to plant early potatoes (of course, this sign only applies in the southern regions). We also watched the weather: what it was like for Gabriel, the same would be for Sergei Kapustnik.
