A four-star hotel on the island of Usedom declared bankruptcy and its management was taken over by a temporary trustee. One of the reasons mentioned by the German media is the competition from cheaper hotels on the other side of the border, i.e. in Poland.

Having a hotel close to the beach is no longer a recipe for success. This is demonstrated by the avalanche of bankruptcies that our western neighbors must face. The bankruptcy of Kaliebe in Trassenheide is not an isolated case. In Stralsund, the Scheelehof hotel found itself in financial difficulties and had to close its operations. A similar fate befell Usedom Palace, which stopped accepting guests after 125 years – reports “Bild”.

Many hotels on the Baltic Sea face the same difficulties, i.e. employee costs and high energy and food prices.

Reducing VAT in the catering industry helps many. However, for some it is too late – the managers point out.

Additionally, historic facilities are under pressure from, on the one hand, modern resorts with a rich SPA offer and swimming pools (which, let's be honest, are very useful during the capricious weather on the Baltic Sea), and on the other – from similar standard but cheaper hotels on the Polish side.

The problems of the Kaliebe hotel in Mecklenburg include the recent – and as it turns out – unsuccessful investments that added a star to the three-star facility. The financial situation was not helped by rising employee costs and energy and food prices.
