There will be new euro banknotes. An outstanding Polish woman will appear at one of them

From July 15 to August 18, graphic designers from across the European Union can submit their proposals for new euro banknotes. As ECB representatives say in a statement, the projects will be selected in an open competition. The decision is scheduled for 2026. The new banknotes will enter circulation a few years later.
We already know what illustrations will be on the money. Experts from the euro zone and over 350,000 people had their say on this matter. Union citizens interviewed in the survey. Together they decided that the new series of the European currency would be based on two main themes. “European Culture” and “Rivers and Birds”.

The banknotes will feature, among others: Maria Skłodowska-Curie. The second series will be decorated with bird motifs
The theme “European Culture” aims to highlight Europe's historical and cultural heritage. The obverses of the banknotes will feature figures who played a key role in the development of the continent, such as artists, scientists and writers. The 5 euro denomination will feature Maria Callas, the 10 euro will feature Ludwig van Beethoven, and the 20 euro will commemorate Maria Skłodowska-Curie. Other banknotes also feature Miguel de Cervantes, Leonardo da Vinci and Bertha von Suttner. “Their lives span six centuries, during which they lived, traveled and worked on our continent, and their achievements resonated around the world,” the ECB explains on its website.
The reverses will show, among others: scenes with street artists, a teacher and her students and the interior of the library.

The “Rivers and Birds” theme reflects Europe's natural ecosystems. “It emphasizes the importance of nature and environmental protection,” say the bank's representatives. The obverses will feature, among others: a saxifrage against the background of mountains, a kingfisher, a bee-eater, a stork and a booby. The reverse side will feature illustrations depicting EU institutions. These include, for example, the European Parliament, the European Commission and the European Central Bank.
