The Minister of Finance, on the excise duty reduction: “Maybe it doesn't seem like much, but we made a very big effort” / “The crisis, much more serious than the one in 2022”

The Minister of Finance, Alexandru Nazare, said that the Government chose to act in the diesel excise area because “it is uniform in the market” and thus avoids a scenario in which queues could have formed at those operators who reduce the price.
On Friday, on Antena 3, the official said that the authorities must maintain “a balance, both from the point of view of ensuring the product and from the fiscal-budgetary point of view”.
“The volatility of external prices, and this crisis is an eminently external crisis, is very high. The diesel quotation, at Platts and the Brent quotation, increased and increases a lot from one day to the next, depending on various issues that do not concern Romania, and here, unfortunately, we are very vulnerable”, he added.
In Friday's meeting, the government approved the reduction of the excise duty on standard diesel by 30 money per liter.
“From Tuesday onwards, we will also see the effect of this 11% excise tax reduction. It may not seem like much, 30 money is not such a big reduction, but know that we made a great effort to cover the negative impact on the budget for this amount”, continued the Minister of Finance.
Nazare: This crisis is much more serious than the one in 2022
The minister said that “it is an extremely complicated period”, in which all the state authorities must make “maximum efforts to fix things”.
“There is a permanent pressure in this period, and this crisis (…) is much bigger, much more important, much more significant than the crisis of 2022. Then the conditions were different”, he said.
Alexandru Nazare also spoke about the solidarity contribution of the economic operators in the sector who obtained exceptional profits, explaining that these profits are “due to the crisis situation we are in, not to a merit of the respective company”.
“We are in a crisis. Solidarity is not optional for those who have exceptional profits. We are dealing with an exceptional profit in the case of those who have production in Romania and trade in Romania at the same time, because these companies forecasted a business plan for 2026 in which they had certain quotations taken into account and absolutely all their investments, all their plans took into account those quotations. Now, those quotations have doubled”, he added declared Minister Alexandru Nazare.
