The White House on Friday revealed that it will ask Congress for permission to allocate approximately $1.5 trillion for defense purposes in fiscal year 2027. The media emphasizes that this would be the largest military budget in modern history. At the same time, cuts were proposed in programs outside the defense sector.

An uncompromising budget. The US is approaching World War II spending
The president's budget, as always, is more a declaration of the White House's goals than an action plan that will be adopted by Congress, Axios emphasized. The project presented on Friday shows that the president wants to spend large sums on the military while at the same time introducing savings in the rest of the federal budget.
Defense spending included in the White House proposal reach the amount of USD 1.5 trillion, i.e. by 42%. more than in fiscal year 2026. The proposal provides for USD 1.1 trillion. for the Pentagon and $350 billion. among others on critically important weapons and efforts to expand the defense industry. The Pentagon is requesting the purchase of 34 ships, including new Trump-class battleships and new frigates. The application also includes funds for the construction of the Golden Dome air defense system.
The president announced that he would apply for such an amount in January, i.e. before the start of the war against Iran.
Something for something, i.e. cuts in environmental protection and science
At the same time, Trump wants spending on non-military purposes to decrease by approximately 10%. The administration is requesting cuts of $73 billion in national ministries, which would affect, among others: diversity and inclusion programs. The largest cuts would affect the Small Business Administration (down about 67 percent), the National Science Foundation (about 55 percent) and the Environmental Protection Agency (about 52 percent).
Trump's budget must be approved by Congress. Recently, due to the lack of agreement on financing between Republicans and Democrats, the longest shutdown (paralysis) of government agencies in history occurred.
