Folk calendar
Kirill Katanik
On this day, the Orthodox Church honors Bishop Cyril of Catania, who lived in Sicily in the 1st and 2nd centuries.
The Russian people, as often happens, changed the name of the saint in their own way, putting a new meaning into it. They said that Katanika Day was the last opportunity to sled down the mountains on melting snow.
On Kirill's day, the sleds were cleaned and put away – they would no longer be useful until next winter. Therefore, the children were told: “Roar, don’t roar, Katanik has taken away the sled.”
On this day it was already possible to change felt boots to birch bark bast shoes. However, both shoes were poor protection from cold and dampness – so fevers began to come to the huts again. Furnace ash and coal were considered the best protection against them. They had to be taken from the oven hot, wrapped in a scarf and applied to the sore spot. An improvised heating pad often helped, and the disease subsided.
However, there were also very strange ways to cure fever: in some regions, patients were offered to kiss the butt of a cow and drink the water in which they washed clothes.
It was also believed that according to Cyril Katanik, one should not look at the sky without accidentally seeing a falling star. This foreshadowed great misfortune.
