A bear stole one of the dogs from the Khakass hermit Agafya Lykova

In Khakassia, the Old Believer hermit Agafya Lykova was left without one dog due to a bear attack. Director of the Khakassky Nature Reserve Viktor Nepomnyashchy spoke about this at a press conference.

Describing the hermit’s household, he explained that it was already difficult for Agafya Lykova to cope with it.

“The goats need to be removed, I constantly persuade her to do this. That’s why it’s difficult to feed them – their health is no longer what it used to be. Now there are only five of them – two goats and three female goats. There were also two chickens and two dogs, but in the fall one was stolen by a bear. And a lot of cats,” said Victor Nepomnyashchiy.

Now the hermit lives alone, her assistant had to be taken out of the sanctuary. Volunteers from the Kemerovo region provided assistance to the elderly woman: they brought hay for goats and other necessary supplies, including medicines and food. The next delivery is planned after it is possible to get to Lykova along the river. Victor Nepomnyashchy explained that applications for volunteers from Moscow have already been made – they will arrive in August. Helpers are also expected to arrive in July.

The director of the reserve noted that he constantly maintains contact with Agafya Lykova – she usually calls on Mondays, in the morning, after a meeting with employees.

“We even joke among ourselves that the deputies report, and then Agafya Karpovna also reports on how the situation is there. I constantly ask how her health is, and she answers me: “Due to her age,” shared Viktor Nepomnyashchiy.

Agafya Lykova is the last representative of a family of Old Believers who hid in the taiga back in the 1930s and have since lived in complete isolation. In 1978, geologists found themselves near their settlement. Then there were five taiga residents: the head of the family, Karp Lykov, sons Savvin (45 years old) and Dimitry (36 years old), and daughters Natalya (42 years old) and Agafya (34 years old). In 1981, three of the children died one after another, and in 1988 the Lykovs’ father passed away.
