In Yekaterinburg, intensive care doctors at Central City Clinical Hospital No. 24 treated several people with diabetes who were on the verge of death due to treatment violations. Patients neglected their diet, skipped injections, did not follow the dosage, and some replaced the medicine with alcohol, reports the Ural Meridian news agency.

According to the head of the intensive care unit, Nikolai Shadrin, vacations are especially dangerous: heat, an unlimited choice of food and alcohol sharply increase the risks. Because of this, severe ketoacidosis develops, a life-threatening condition due to a lack of insulin.
The patients included a 19-year-old girl with an insulin pump who had poor glucose and dosage control and was using illicit substances. Another 21-year-old patient was admitted to intensive care after drinking wine. Both were saved. Elderly people were also admitted to the hospital: a 70-year-old woman uncontrollably injected herself with insulin, a 68-year-old man after a multi-day binge.
In most patients, the blood pH level reached critical values: 6.5-6.7, while the norm was 7.35-7.45. Ketoacidosis develops rapidly, affects the brain, causes breathing problems, acid-base balance and kidney failure. Doctors urge diabetics to strictly follow the recommendations, especially on vacation.
