Chelsea have announced a record Premier League pre-tax loss. The £262m shortfall for the 2024/25 season dwarfs Manchester City's £179.5m loss in 2011.

The situation is all the more surprising as the club's declared revenue reached £490.9 million, the second highest level in Chelsea's history.

Last season, the Blues won the Conference League and finished 4th in the Premier League, and later went on to lift the Club World Cup trophy.

Chelsea had the biggest financial losses in history

The club says it still complies with the Profitability and Sustainability Rules, which allow losses of up to £105m over a three-year period. However, the figures used in these calculations differ from pre-tax net loss.

Chelsea have invested over £1bn in transfers since BlueCo took over the club. The strategy was based on signing long-term contracts with young players so that the costs were spread over time.

At the start of the season, UEFA fined the London club £26.7 million for breaching match-related expenditure report rules and placed the club under monitoring for a period of three years.

Chelsea officials expect revenues to reach record levels in the next financial reports. These will include around £85m from the Club World Championship and a further £80m from TV rights for participation in the Champions League.

For next season, the club anticipates revenues of around £700m.
