A UN peacekeeper in Lebanon has died

— We don't know the origin of the bullet. We have launched an investigation to establish all the circumstances of the incident, said the UN mission in Lebanon.

UNIFIL units have been stationed in southern Lebanon since 1978, monitoring the security situation along the demarcation line with Israel, which remains one of the main points of tension between the Israeli army and Iran-backed Hezbollah. As Reuters reminds, the mandate of the UNIFIL mission is valid until the end of 2026. Currently, approximately 7.5 thousand people participate in it. soldiers from almost 50 countries. In recent years, international forces have repeatedly come under fire from both Israel and Hezbollah.

Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced on Sunday that a booby trap exploded in Lebanon while a patrol of PKW UNIFIL soldiers was moving in a military vehicle. One Polish soldier suffered minor injuries.

On March 6, the Ghana Armed Forces reported that their battalion's UNIFIL position was hit during rocket attacks, resulting in two soldiers receiving serious injuries. The Israeli military later admitted that fire from an Israeli tank hit a UN position that same day, injuring Ghanaian soldiers. According to the Israeli army, it was in retaliation for anti-tank missiles fired by Hezbollah, in which two Israeli soldiers were injured.

— We once again call on all parties to respect their obligations under international law and to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property at all times, including by refraining from actions that could expose peacekeepers to danger, the mission said.

Reuters notes that Lebanon has been drawn into a new phase of regional tensions after Hezbollah fired on Israel, declaring solidarity with Iran after earlier Israeli and American strikes on targets linked to Tehran. In response, Israel intensified military operations against the group.
