President Nicusor Dan laid a wreath at the Monument to the Heroes of the 1989 Revolution, in University Square

The President of Romania, Nicusor Dan, laid a wreath on Sunday at the Monument to the Heroes of the 1989 Revolution, located in Bucharest's University Square, to pay tribute to the victims of the Revolution. The Presidential Administration officially announced this ceremony, emphasizing the importance of preserving the memory of those who lost their lives for the freedom of Romania.

Last year, on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the Revolution, Nicusor Dan, then general mayor of the Capital, declared that we have the duty to protect the democracy won at the price of the lives of heroes and to maintain the European direction of Bucharest and Romania.

“Twe need to stop for a moment and remember those times, about the Romanians who died in the Revolution so that we now have the freedom to choose our path and to say what we think without fear. Thanks to them we live in a free society, based on European values and respect for fundamental rights“, Nicusor Dan wrote in a post on Facebook, quoted by News.ro.

He emphasized then that the won democracy must be defended: “We must show through deeds that we are worthy of their supreme sacrifice, honor those who fought for freedom, democracy and justice. Our duty is to protect the democracy won at the cost of the lives of our heroes and to maintain the European direction of Bucharest and Romania.”

Also on Sunday, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan sent a message related to the Revolution of 1989 and the evolution of Romania since then. He said that, after 36 years of freedom, Romania “returned to the path of democracy“, but that not everything was done correctly and that there are still aspects to be corrected in society. Bolojan urged the Romanians not to let themselves “attracted by dangerous nostalgia or attempts to relativize the crimes of communismHe emphasized that, thanks to the sacrifice of those who stood up against the dictatorship, Romania is today a free country where citizens can vote, express themselves freely and decide their future.
