The tragedy occurred on Saturday in Witten, North Rhine-Westphalia, as the family was preparing to go on Christmas vacation. According to German media reports, the car had already packed luggage and a dog was also waiting inside. At some point, an argument broke out between the spouses, which turned into a brutal attack.

Witnesses report that there were loud screams in the street, followed by sudden silence. The neighbor said that she first heard a noise, and then everything went quiet. According to the findings, the 40-year-old man first attacked his 38-year-old wife with a knife, then his nine-year-old daughter, and finally his 13-year-old son.
The boy did not survive the attack – despite immediate medical treatment, he died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. His mother and younger sister underwent surgery and their condition is now considered serious. The police arrested the perpetrator just 100 meters from the scene of the tragedy. The man has no previous convictions and has so far refused to testify.
On Sunday, the 40-year-old was charged with murder and two attempted murders. Investigators are determining the detailed circumstances of the incident and the man's motives. According to media reports, he has not had any police records so far.
