Macron's warning on the situation in Iraq. The US Embassy in Baghdad was attacked with drones

Two drones launched at the US embassy in Baghdad were intercepted by Iraqi air defenses, a senior security official announced on Saturday, the first attack of this type against the diplomatic mission in the last ten days, reports AFP, taken over by Agerpres.

According to the quoted official, the drones fell outside the Green Zone, the ultra-secure neighborhood in central Baghdad that houses Iraqi state institutions and foreign diplomatic missions.

A second official confirmed an attack carried out with an explosive drone that was shot down.

The most recent attack of this kind was recorded on March 18.

Several raids, attributed to the United States and Israel, have in recent weeks targeted pro-Iranian armed groups in Iraq, such as the Hezbollah Brigades, while these factions have claimed dozens of daily drone and missile attacks against the American military presence in Iraq and other Middle Eastern countries.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday called for “everything to be done” to avoid Iraq being “trained in the ongoing escalation” of the current conflict in the Middle East, reports France Presse.

“The sovereignty of Iraq and that of Kurdistan within it are indispensable for regional stability,” the French head of state said after a phone call with the president of the Iraqi Kurdistan region, Neshirvan Barzani, whose residence was targeted by a drone attack on Saturday morning.

“This very worrying development adds to a recrudescence of attacks against Iraqi institutions,” Macron emphasized.
