Clint Trayhern, 54, from Pontypool, has built an unconventional training and nutrition routine that helps him stay at the top of natural bodybuilding and dream of the title of Natural Mr. Universe.
“I'm eating 30 eggs a day in my quest to be Mr. Universe,” Clint confesses. In addition to eggs, he also consumes raw garlic every day, and a chili pepper “ignite the blood” before training, according to the BBC.
Clint has three servings of raw eggs a day, eating mainly the whites and eliminating the yolks, which contain most of the fat and cholesterol.
“Eggs are full of protein and vitamins, the right vitamins. When you do everything naturally it's just hard work, you know, there's no other way. You've got to diet. I probably spend £60-£70 a week on eggs, chicken and beef, just for proteine”, explains the athlete.
His daily routine includes the first 10 eggs with porridge for breakfast, followed after two hours by chicken breast or fish with a green apple.
At lunch he consumes another 10 eggs, and at 3:00 p.m. a piece of beef with 5% fat, rice and an apple. In the evening eat the last 10 eggs and fish with sweet potato.
He also drinks two whey protein shakes with 20g of protein mixed with turmeric, black pepper and ginger. During workouts, he also consumes liquid honey instead of energy drinks.
Clint Trayhern found his inspiration for bodybuilding in 1982 when he saw Arnold Schwarzenegger in the movie Conan the Barbarian. At 12, while his brother dreamed of a motorcycle for Christmas, Clint wanted a weight bench.
“I probably trained for the first four or five years with no visible results and stayed thin. But, I always felt that something was going on. Slowly but surely, around the age of 20 I started gaining muscle mass more and more”he tells.
For four months before a competition, Clint ends up consuming up to 4,000 calories a day and hits the gym four times a week. In the week before the competition, he gradually reduces his intake to 900 calories to shape his physique.
Also aim for a daily intake of one gram of protein for every pound of body weight, which is about 220g currently. Clint is 1.87m and weighs almost 100kg, but for competitions he aims to reach 82.5kg.
What is natural bodybuilding?
Natural bodybuilding focuses on muscle development and physical aesthetics without the use of doping substances such as anabolic steroids or human growth hormone. There are several competitions in the UK and around the world where competitors are rigorously tested for drugs.
