Scientists from the Siberian Botanical Garden of Tomsk State University have received patents for 24 varieties of ornamental plants. Among them are azaleas, hippeastrum, echinacea, bergenia, heuchera, spruce, peony, pine and phlox. All developments have passed state registration, RIA Tomsk reports with reference to the university’s press service.

The botanical garden has been breeding for 145 years. His collections of azaleas (190 varieties) and hippeastrums (70 varieties) are considered one of the largest in the country. And the collection of phlox includes more than 300 varieties – this is the largest collection beyond the Urals.

To develop new plants, scientists have developed effective hybridization schemes. For species intended for open ground, resistance to diseases and bad weather – cold, drought, waterlogging – has been improved. For example, phlox, which often suffers from powdery mildew, now has a variety that is almost immune to this disease.

In a number of characteristics, the new plants are superior to their foreign counterparts. After registration, they will become available to professionals and amateur flower growers throughout Russia.
