Folk calendar

Venedikt's Day, Skotnik

Saint Benedict of Nursia was the founder of the Western monastic movement, the author of one of the most important charters of the Latin tradition. In the Orthodox tradition he is revered as a saint.

In Rus', it was customary to care for domestic animals, since many of them began to shed these days. The cattle were taken out into the yard, cleaned and scrubbed, and talked out of the evil eye.

They said about this day: “Don’t be lazy about the Cattleman – bow to the cattle.” There were other sayings about domestic animals: “To lead cattle is to walk without opening your mouth”; “A cow in the yard is food on the table”; “A pig is a piggy bank: what you put in it is what you take out.”

By the way, there were also special subtleties in caring for pigs: “Calling pigs while looking out the window means they won’t go into the garden.”

We also observed signs. The frost on Venedict foreshadowed the same weather for the week ahead. But thunder on this day promised a fruitful and fertile summer.
