On their website, the hacker group Handala Hack Team stated that Patel “will now find his name on the list of victims of successfully hacked accounts”.

A Justice Department official confirmed that Patel's email had been hacked and said the material published online appeared genuine.

Handala, which calls itself a group of pro-Palestinian judicial hackers, is believed by Western experts to be one of several identities used by the Iranian government's cyber-intelligence units, the News writes.

Handala recently claimed responsibility for the March 11 cyber attack on Michigan-based medical device and services provider Stryker, claiming it wiped out a huge amount of the company's data.

Reuters could not independently authenticate Patel's emails, but the personal Gmail address that Handala claims to have hacked matches the address associated with Patel in previous data breaches kept by dark web intelligence firm District 4 Labs.

A sample of the material uploaded by the hackers and analyzed by Reuters appears to contain a mix of personal and professional correspondence from 2010-2019.
