Feofan's Day
Theophan the Confessor is a Byzantine monk, chronicler, revered by the Orthodox Church as a saint. The biography of Theophanes is known from the life written by Patriarch Methodius in the 9th century, as well as from his own work “Chronography”. The monk is credited with the gift of working miracles—healing diseases and casting out demons.
In Rus', on this day, people went out into the street in the morning to welcome spring. It was believed that the snow cover completely melted towards Feofan and the soil thawed.
On this day, special attention was given to horses – the first assistants of the peasants. It was believed that if an animal fell ill on Feofan, it would be unwell all summer. To protect against diseases and the evil eye, horses were taken to a spring and watered with silver – that is, a silver coin or ring was immersed in water.
There were many sayings and signs associated with horses. For example, they said: “A good owner does not have a bad horse.” They also noticed: if a horse shakes its head and throws it up, it means bad weather; if it snorts on the road, it means a joyful meeting.
We also monitored the weather that day. The fog on Feofan foreshadowed the harvest of flax, oats and hemp. To make the omen come true, people went out into the street and treated the birds – throwing them hemp and flax seeds. Hemp fiber used to be used to make twine, ropes, and coarse fabrics, and hemp oil was consumed as food and used for painting.
