The head of the Federal Aviation Administration, Bryan Bedford, said that there was moderate wind and limited visibility at the airport, and the incident occurred during the services' response to the interrupted take-off of another plane.

This is an absolute tragedy – he said, expressing his condolences to the pilots' families.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani praised the behavior of passengers who helped each other after the collision.

– It could have been a much bigger tragedy if not for the quick and calm reaction of the people on board – he emphasized. Similarly, the head of the Port Authority, Kathryn Garcia, said that “it could have been a much more serious accident.”

Data quoted by the New York Times show that after landing, the plane was moving along the runway at a speed of about 244 km per hour, and then slowed down rapidly. Recordings from the air traffic control tower suggest that the controller may have been distracted at the time of the incident.

The airport remained closed on Monday until 14, and the first Delta flight to Atlanta took off at 2:08 p.m. As a result of the accident, over 500 flights were canceled, which affected the plans of tens of thousands of travelers.
