The EU-Mercosur Agreement provisionally enters into force. Farmers are afraid of competition


Why is this important?

The agreement with Mercosur is highly controversial among European farmers who fear the inflow of cheap food from South America. It could threaten the competitiveness of EU producers. At the beginning of January, EU countries adopted a trade agreement, although it was opposed by, among others, Poland and France. On January 17, the agreement was signed in the capital of Paraguay, Asuncion, and was approved despite protests from farmers across Europe, including Poland.
