Dacian Cioloș is running for the head of an international organization. The proposal was made by Nicușor Dan

President Nicușor Dan has announced that former Prime Minister Dacian Cioloș will be Romania's candidate for the position of Secretary General of the International Organization of Fracophony.

The president announced the candidacy of Dacian Cioloș during an event organized at the Cotroceni Palace, on the occasion of the International Francophonie Day.

The new general secretary of the OIF will be appointed in November, at the summit in Cambodia, for the period 2027-2030.

The current Secretary-General is Louise Mushikiwabo (former Foreign Minister of Rwanda, 2009-2018), at the end of her second four-year term.

Apart from Dacian Cioloș, there are two other candidates, promoted by Central African countries.

“It's a good sign that we have a competition, a sign of vitality, and in this context we believe that the appearance of a new candidacy can bring an additional option and stimulate a necessary debate about the future of the organization,” said Nicușor Dan, in the address given on Monday.

“I have the pleasure to announce that we are considering the involvement of Romania in this competition by launching the candidacy of Mr. Dacian Cioloș, former prime minister and former European Commissioner for Agriculture. It is a region that has not given a general secretary, an option with the vocation to bring together”, continued the president

The General Secretary of La Francophonie is the highest official of the OIF, elected for a period of four years by the Summit. He is the legal representative of the OIF and has duties in the implementation of the decisions of the Permanent Council of Francophonie, which he chairs. The General Secretary leads the political action of the Francophonie and is the spokesperson of the OIF.
